Campervan Hire in the UK

After our experiences renting campervans on three separate occasions, I decided it was the perfect time to share my top tips for campervan hire. If you’re thinking of trying out campervanning before committing to buying your own campervan, these tips will help you make the most of the experience. While purchasing a campervan without a trial run is possible, I highly recommend giving it a try first!

If you’re planning to rent a campervan for your next trip, here are my best tips for navigating your first motorhome hire in the UK!

The cost of campervan hire in the UK

The cost of hiring a campervan is something that many people will take into consideration when it comes to hiring one for the first time.

How much it costs to hire a campervan depends on so many different factors, including the season, weather, demand and even global pandemics… With many people in the UK opting to remain closer to home for their trips and travels this year, the demand for campervan hire has absolutely skyrocketed over the last few months and a week’s hire of a campervan in the UK could cost you anywhere between £300 and £1300, depending on when you want to hire it, how long for and the type of campervan or motorhome you want!

The cost to hire a campervan or motorhome certainly isn’t cheap and in many cases, it’s actually much more expensive than going abroad, but if it’s an experience that you really want to do, renting a campervan in the UK then 365camperhire.co.uk can help you with your plans.

Pick-up and drop-off locations – what to look for when hiring a campervan

When hiring a campervan, it’s important to consider the terms and conditions regarding pick-up and drop-off locations.

Some rental companies require you to return the campervan to the same location where you picked it up. Others offer greater flexibility, allowing you to pick up the vehicle in one city (such as a London airport) and drop it off in a completely different location (like Edinburgh).

The level of flexibility you need will depend on the type of trip you’re planning and the duration of your journey. Before finalizing your booking, make sure to review the rental company’s terms and conditions, especially regarding pick-up and drop-off policies, so you know what to expect.

At 365camperhire.co.uk we do require you to return to our base in Fleet, Hampshire. We are quite close to Heathrow Airport so we offer a pick up service from the Airport.

The minimum age you have to be to hire a campervan in Scotland and England

Just because you have a full UK driving licence and you passed your test when you were 17, unfortunately, doesn’t mean that you’ll automatically be able to hire a campervan with no problems.

It depends on the campervan rental company, but you usually have to be at least 21 years old to rent a campervan in some cases, and some companies have a minimum age requirement of 25 years old.

At 365camperhire.co.uk we are able to offer rentals to persons of 21 and upwards.

The length of the rental period – hiring a campervan

Campervan rentals typically allow you to choose the duration that suits your plans, whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an extended trip lasting a month. Most rental companies are quite accommodating when it comes to trip lengths.

However, if you’re planning to rent a campervan during the peak summer season—especially on short notice—you may face limited availability for longer trips. To avoid disappointment, it’s a good idea to book your campervan well in advance. That said, if you enjoy spontaneous adventures like we do, you might need to be flexible with your plans!

Being open to adjusting your travel dates can also give you a wider selection of campervans to choose from. If your schedule isn’t flexible, you may need to invest extra time searching for availability that matches your preferred dates.

Check whether insurance is included in the hire price

More often than not, when you hire a campervan or motorhome in the UK, insurance will be included. Some rental companies offer insurance extras, like EU travel, or extra drivers or even CDW (to cover the deposit) or even cancellation policies.

Ensuring that you have a suitable insurance policy when hiring a campervan is imperative, it will allow you to complete your journey without worry, it’s always worth having.

The size of the van

The size of the van that you want to hire is another consideration you’ll have to take into account.

There are literally dozens of models to choose from, so whether you want a campervan van like ours or a beloved VW Transporter, or you want something much more spacious to accommodate the whole family such as a 4 or 5-berth motorhome, the size and style of van you want will affect other factors such as cost, storage facilities and the facilities it has included within the van.

Do you want toilet and shower facilities?

What’s included in the cost (equipment, bedding etc) + any extra costs associated with the hire

When hiring a campervan, some companies include absolutely everything you need within the rental cost, including bedding, towels, cooking equipment, camping chairs and table and more. 365camperhire.co.uk Offer an all included type or rental to help you enjoy your trip. Check out what’s included in our rentals here Whats Included

However, some campervan rental companies will only charge you for the price of hiring the campervan and then you might be expected to pay for additional extras separately. If you’re happy to bring your own bedding, pillows, towels and even camping chairs, then it might be best to opt out of adding any extras to the cost of hiring a campervan.

However, if you’d prefer to opt for the easier and more convenient option, then it might be better to ask the rental company to include the cost of absolutely everything in the quote they give you for hiring the van.

While I’m pretty sure that I’ve included all the important considerations that you should take into account when hiring a campervan above, I have added a few bonus points below that you might want to think about when renting a campervan for the first time.

Europe’s Top Campervan Routes

Enjoy campervan routes to world-famous destinations. Incredible scenery and rich histories have made European countries popular destinations for international travellers for years. And no matter how you travel to and around the continent, you’re sure to have a memorable experience.

That being said, there’s truly no better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to hit the road and go on one of Europe’s best drives, exploring every hidden treasure along the way.

There’s no need to worry if you haven’t mastered fuel-efficient motorhome driving or perfected your go-to mobile campervan meals. Just like on the UK’s best routes, you’ll have plenty of facilities along the way – whether you’re after a petrol station, restaurant or something else.

Best of all? The countries are well connected, making it easy for you to pass from one to the other in just a few hours. But before you get going, you’ll need to decide exactly where you’ll be going. To help, we’ve put together this guide to Europe’s must-travel motorhome and campervan routes.

European Campervan Routes

Portuguese coast – Bilbao to Faro

Portugal tends to take a back seat when it comes to beloved British holiday destinations. But there’s no good reason for this, campervan routes across Portugal are spectacular. You can have your fill of seafood and sunshine all along its Atlantic coast, making it a great location for some seaside camping.

Since there are no ferries that go directly to Portugal, you’ll need to go via Spain. Brittany Ferries operate the only ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, with two trips taking place per week in the summer months.

After enjoying Bilbao’s golden beaches and delicious pintxos – a local variety of tapas – it’s time for you to drive southwest to Porto, where your tour of the Portuguese coast will begin. After this, you’ll pass through Leiria, Lisbon and Lagos before completing the route in Faro.

After all that travelling, you’ll deserve a rest. Why not take a break from driving and stay a while at Faro campervan park? Here you’ll enjoy free Wi-Fi and water, as well as quick and easy access to the beach and town nearby.

Campervan routes to The Netherlands and Belgium

The Netherlands and Belgium contain vibrant cosmopolitan cities, storied histories and luscious countryside. Yet, despite these similarities, you’ll enjoy the fascinating differences in their respective cultures if you choose this route.

To start, you can either take the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam or the from Harwich to Hook of Holland – though, of course, the latter option is much quicker. Both destinations are close to The Hague, and this is where you’ll be setting off from.

You can either drive south and cross into Antwerp or first go north to Amsterdam before looping back. If you’ve never been to the Dutch capital, you’ll want to make the extended trip. Packed with museums, green spaces and picturesque canals, it isn’t a city to miss. Plus there are plenty of campsites near Amsterdam for you to park in for the duration of your visit.

From Antwerp, you’ll continue south to Brussels and then north-west through Ghent and miles of gorgeous Belgian country until you arrive in Bruges. After long days of exploring cobbled streets and medieval buildings, you’ll have a choice of campsites to stay at – including Klein Strand in Jabekke or Campsite Bonanza 1 in Blankenberge – both a short drive from the capital of West Flanders.

France to Spain Campervan Routes

Maybe you want to take the scenic route to Spain. Or perhaps the idea of missing out on hundreds of miles of French countryside just doesn’t sit right with you. Either way, travelling through France to Spain could be the perfect European route for you. Starting at the English Channel and continuing to the Bay of Biscay, you’re sure to make the memories of a lifetime along the way.

First, you’ll take one of the ferries from Dover to Calais. From here, drive south and then southwest to Rouen, before veering south to the quaint commune of Nonancourt. From Nonancourt, continue driving south until you reach Poitiers, a city famous for its captivating Romanesque architecture and art.

Next, you should drive to Bordeaux – the fruity, dry wine’s namesake – before continuing to Bayonne, a delightful Basque city near the coast. It’s just a short drive southwest to the border from here and then west to Bilbao.

At this point, you’ll have driven across France and made it into Spain – so, you’d be excused if you took the ferry from Bilbao to Portsmouth after staying at one of the campsites nearby. But if you’re hungry for more, you’ll have the entire Iberian Peninsula at your disposal.

A motorhome offers holiday freedom and flexibility for most owners, particularly off the back of travel restrictions both internationally and here in the UK. However, it’s no secret that the cost of fuel is continuing to rise significantly, with recent reports showing the price of diesel has now reached a record high of over £1.80 per litre. UPDATE: whilst the price is now slightly less than that now, the cost of fuel needs to be considered.

But there are ways to cut back on your fuel expenditure without reducing your campervan driving. We’ve gathered some top fuel-saving tips for motorhome owners which will allow you to take care of your spending and still enjoy your pride and joy this summer.

How to save fuel while driving your motorhome

The fleet of campervans and motorhomes available from 365camperhire.co.uk are modern up to date fuel efficient vehicles, view our fleet here Our Campervans

Manage your payload

If you’re looking at how to reduce fuel costs for your motorhome trip, there are a few ways to ensure you keep the payload down.

Get your onboard water at your destination

Carrying water on board can mean extra unnecessary weight. A typical tank can hold between 60 and 140 litres of water which will add a significant amount onto your payload. Carry only what is needed for your journey and fill up your tank on arrival at your destination.

Offload your waste before you leave

Many sites offer facilities to enable you to get rid of your grey water waste. A portable tank can be a handy solution if you’re unable to reach the waste drain or you don’t have a suitable hose to drain the tank with.

Carry minimal items

Although it may seem obvious, keeping onboard items to a minimum is a great fuel-saving tip for motorhome owners. Consider choosing lighter equipment where possible and only carry what you really need.

How to drive your motorhome efficiently

Just like driving a car or any other vehicle, you’ll want to drive in a way that doesn’t burn through fuel quickly. To ensure you get the most out of your tank, follow these tips on driving a motorhome or campervan for greater fuel efficiency:

Maintain your motorhome

365campervans are well maintained and before you set off on your campervan driving trip, we make sure we carry out general checks, such as tyre pressure etc. These checks help to keep your motorhome in working order. This will also help maximise fuel efficiency.

Use fuel apps

Another easy tip on how to reduce fuel costs for your campervan is to make use of fuel apps, both in the UK and when motorhome driving abroad. Apps such as PetrolPrices and 1-2-3 Fuel will help you find the cheapest nearby fuel, saving you money at the pump.
